What standard does this website aim to meet?

We aim for this website to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. WCAG 2.2 is the current version of the W3C’s accessibility standard. We check the site with an automated accessibility checker and by hand, using a keyboard, before launch and after significant changes.

What do we do to make the site accessible?

We build accessibility into the page templates, so every page gets the same basics. The templates are designed to provide:

  • Keyboard navigation: you can reach and use every link, menu, form and control with a keyboard alone.
  • Visible focus: a clear focus indicator shows where you are on the page, and it is not hidden behind other content.
  • Colour contrast: body text has a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 against its background, and large text at least 3:1, as WCAG 2.2 level AA requires.
  • Alt text: meaningful images have descriptive text alternatives, and decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
  • Reduced motion: if your device is set to reduce motion, we reduce or turn off non-essential animation.
  • Homepage background video: the video has no sound, and a pause control, which you can reach by keyboard, lets you stop it at any time.
  • Forms: every form field has a visible label.
  • Structure: pages use headings in a logical order, declare Australian English as their language and deliver their content as HTML that does not depend on JavaScript.

We apply the same standard to the websites we build for clients.

Are there any known limitations?

Some parts of the site may not yet fully meet WCAG 2.2 level AA, and we list known issues here as we find them, with what we are doing about them. At the moment, the limitations we know about are:

  • Downloadable templates: our templates and checklists are Word (DOCX) documents. We structure them with headings, but if you need one in another format, ask and we will provide it.
  • Other websites: we link to regulators, software vendors and other sources. We do not control how accessible those sites are.

How can you report a problem or ask for another format?

If you find something on this website hard to use, please tell us and we will work to fix it. Use our contact form and start your message with “Accessibility”.

It helps to include the page address, what you were trying to do, and the device, browser or assistive technology you use. We aim to reply within five business days. If you need any content, including our downloadable templates, in a different format, we will provide it where we reasonably can. Our privacy policy explains how we handle the details you send us.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Australian Human Rights Commission, which handles complaints under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth).
