AI agent
An AI agent is software that uses a large language model to work towards a goal by taking actions, not just answering questions. It can read information, decide on a next step, use tools such as email, calendars or a practice-management system, check the result and carry on. A chatbot drafts a reply for you to send; an agent can find the right client, draft the reply and queue it. Because agents act on real systems, well-designed ones have limited permissions, require human approval before anything leaves the firm and keep an audit log of every action they take.

Example
In an accounting firm
At tax time, an accounting firm's document-chasing agent checks which clients still owe bank statements and receipts, drafts a tailored reminder for each and schedules follow-ups until the documents arrive. A staff member approves each batch of emails before it is sent, and every reminder is recorded against the client's job so the manager can see who has been contacted.
